All services below are covered by OHIP with a physician referral.

X-Ray

X-ray (radiography) is used to image bones, lungs, and other structures. It is covered by OHIP with a physician referral and is usually available the same day or within a few days.

Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves to image soft tissues, organs, and blood vessels. Pelvic, abdominal, thyroid, and musculoskeletal ultrasounds are among the most common referrals.

Vascular Ultrasound

Vascular ultrasound — including Doppler studies — assesses blood flow in arteries and veins. Commonly ordered to check for clots, arterial disease, or varicose veins.

Bone Density Scan

A bone density scan (DEXA) measures bone mineral density to screen for osteoporosis. It is covered by OHIP for patients meeting specific criteria and takes about 15 minutes.

Mammogram

Screening and diagnostic mammography is covered by OHIP. The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) accepts self-referral for women aged 50–74; diagnostic mammography requires a physician referral.

Independent diagnostic imaging in Ontario

In Ontario, most diagnostic imaging — X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, and bone density scans — is covered by OHIP when referred by a physician, nurse practitioner, or midwife. Independent imaging clinics operate outside of hospitals and often have shorter wait times, more flexible hours, and same-week appointments.

NextAva indexes clinics across the Greater Toronto Area and displays their current availability directly from clinic-reported data. Use it to find the closest clinic with an opening for your specific imaging need.

What you need

To book at most independent imaging clinics you need a signed requisition (referral form) from your ordering provider. Your family doctor, walk-in clinic physician, or specialist can provide this. Some services — like OBSP mammography for women aged 50–74 — accept self-referral.

Bring your Ontario health card (OHIP) and referral form to your appointment. Most clinics ask you to call ahead even if they have an online booking portal.
